A symbol with history, the scallop shell was the pilgrim's insignia and was also used as a bowl for drinking from fountains along the Way. Today, it continues to mark the route and can be seen on cairns and signs that guide pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. The ridges on the shell symbolize the different paths that lead to the same destination. It is also associated with water as an element of purification.
